The cleanliness and shower facilities were a total disappointment.
Everything was great, lovely place. The only negative comment I have, is that they are a lot of dogs, which is nice, but at the same time it worried us with the barking when we put our baby to sleep in the evenings. Thankfully she didn't wake up from the barking, but when the dogs barked it put us on edge. This only applies if you have a small baby.

An important prerequisite was good WiFi and cell phone reception and Earth Cottage met both very well. The cottage is also very close to the Hemel-en-Aarde mountain bike route which was very convenient.
This cottage is located in the beautiful Hemel en Aarde valley and aptly named Earth Cottage. There were no surprises ie. the photos are reflective. The cottage was good value for the amount we paid. The owners are friendly and the farm is peaceful.
Earth Cottage is a rustic cottage on a smallholding that is located just a 5 minutes from the Hemel and Aarde Turn off. The cottage is part of the main house but totally private and we did not hear the owners at all. The large stoep with loungers and table was where we spent most of our time. On two days we hiked from the cottage to the top of the mountain where you can see the whole of Hermanus down below. The Cottage is conveniently located on one of the main mountain biking trails and we also made full use of the lovely trails. Die Plaaskombuis farm stall and restaurant is just 500 m walk from the cottage and we had a lovely breakfast there one morning. A point to note is that river water is used in the taps and it has a brownish colour. This did not bother us at all and actually added to the authenticity. The owners breed with horses and golden retrievers but the dogs were surprisingly quiet during our stay there.
No stove or toaster. No secure parking. No view of vineyards. Steps down to cottage, dangerous and not suitable for older folk. No mention that MTN does not connect so no calls and that you need to use WhatsApp.
Extra lighting is required outside for safety. Loose carpets may need to be replaced as they have been tripped over. The shower spilled a lot of water and was wet and slippery.
Really had a great time although there were a few things that bothered me a lot: The shower is above the bath but the outlet is on the floor which is soaking wet when finished showering. One looks out on nothing but a dense forest fence. No cupboards for groceries. Odd assortment of glasses - nothing is 4 of. Stairs to master bedroom are hopelessly too high. Dressing table in master bedroom would be a welcome addition. Other than that we had a great time. Quiet with only the blue-crowned birds and horses for company.
Beautiful setting and very peaceful location. Would be so much better if the undergrowth and fence were cut back so you could see the fields and horses from the veranda, it felt very closed in and dark. The roof leaked in the bathroom and by the door in the bedroom and it would be nice to have a shower curtain over the bath or a slip proof mat on floor! The steps down to the cottage could be made safer. Generally I felt the cottage needs a bit of an upgrade. I thought it looked tired and unloved!
Pleasant relaxed accommodation in the Valley, close to town, and away from the bustle in town. Lovely for walks in the countryside.
Spacious, with an amazing patio area. Was perfect for our exploring the Hemel and Aarde Valley.
Very beautiful and cute. Perfect for animal lovers with all the essentials. Only negative is that there are leaks and it even rained in the bed and the veranda is closed so unfortunately cannot experience the beautiful view. Would definitely recommend.
I will definitely go back to Earth Cottage, my children enjoyed the farm a lot.
We were received very kindly and quickly felt at home. My boy was immediately introduced to the friendliest horses and dogs and he was in heaven with the farm feel. Everything was very neat and we really relaxed. If you ride a mountain bike, the routes run past the cottage and it is awesomely beautiful. It is also only a 10 to 15 minute drive to Hermanus. We really enjoyed it and would go back again anytime. Thank you very much for the owners' kindness and especially the effort you made to make our boy feel so at home.
We'll definitely be back! Highly recommended in absolutely all aspects!
Our stay at Earth Cottage was wonderful and met all our requirements and even created new requirements! The scenery was beautiful and the accommodation exquisite. To top it off was the friendly welcoming committee which came to greet us every day. Sorry Tino, but our 3-year-old son voted for the horses as the best part of Earth Cottage, despite your hospitality. Earth Cottage gave us the opportunity to relax in a quiet environment away from the busy town, yet with the option to be on a beach in 15 minutes and explore the myriad of excellent restaurants in Hermanus. The best of both worlds.
Earth Cottage is very simple accommodation - don't expect too many luxuries. The environment is beautiful. The porch is covered with reeds to block the wind.

-A flight of stairs leads down to the cottage. The steps are uneven in height and width and could be daunting or challenging for older or infirm visitors and people with special needs. Help is at hand to carry your luggage, just ask. Inside, there’s one step from kitchen to lounge and another from the lounge to the bathroom. Two steps lead down from the dining/lounge area to the bedroom.-The water has a slight honey-brown colour. This is pure mountain spring water, simply tainted by the roots of fynbos plants. It is safe for cooking, washing up, bathing and drinking. Even so, shop-bought drinking water is provided.
